So You've Decided You Want A Mastiff Puppy... Now What?
Congratulations, You've decided that you would like to own a Mastiff Puppy!
You probably have a lot of questions before you purchase your puppy, so we will try out best to answer them. Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions that are asked of us. If you find that you need further information, please e-mail us with your specific questions and concerns and we will be happy to contact you.
What type of environment will I need to provide?
Mastiffs need people!! They are not the type of dog that can be chained to a post or kept confined to a small area for an extended period of time. Socializing your puppy is extremely important so you must be prepared to devote a lot of time to your new puppy and continue with this commitment for its entire life. A Mastiff should be treated as an important member of the family. They should have a large fenced area so they can get plenty of exercise.
What do I feed my Mastiff and how much will he eat?
Our dogs are raised and fed a Raw food diet, meaning we feed meat, bone, organ and the occasional veggie. While we would love for all of our puppies to go to homes where this species appropriate diet would continue, we realize that not all people are comfortable feeding this way. Should you chose to feed kibble, adult Mastiff's eat approximately 4 to 5 cups of dog food per day. You will need to feed your puppy a quality adult dog food from the beginning so that his growth stays under control. This is very important for the bone development of your puppy. Puppies that grow too fast can development many problems early on and later in life. We will be happy to suggest types of foods for you to use.
My decision has been made - I WANT A MASTIFF!!
The best thing to do at this point is to fill out our Puppy Application form. Please make sure to fill in all fields so we are able to reach you. We will then contact you to let you know when we will be having puppies. We never take deposits for puppies until we know that the little bundles will be arriving, so please check our website often. If we are not planning puppies in the near future, we will sometimes forward your request on to other responsible breeders that may be able to help you.
How do I decide which puppy from the litter is best for my home?
We always do our best to match a puppy with the right family. After a few e-mails and telephone conversations, we can get a feel for the type of home you will provide. We will then be able to suggest an appropriate puppy for your family. We can also keep you updated with digital photos of your new puppy so you can see their development and create the bond that is so very important for your family and puppy.
What types of temperaments to Mastiffs have?
It is the top priority of Gryphon Mastiffs to produce dogs with excellent temperaments. Although all of the dogs are good natured, there are still many different personalities. Some may be shy, some submissive, and some with a much higher energy level. A loving home to your puppy is very important in the success of having a well-rounded dog.
How much does a puppy cost?
The price of your puppy varies. You will need to decide if you are looking for a "pet" quality dog or if you are interested in a "show" quality dog. Pet quality ranges from $1800 - $2000. Show quality ranges from $2000 - $2500. Quality of the puppy, breeding costs and medical expenses determine the price, and may be higher or lower than what is quoted above.
How do I know what to look for in a puppy?
All dogs have a "breed standard" that is listed with the American Kennel Club. The best way to find what you're looking for is to visit their site at AKC.org. You will also find a lot of other useful information on our other website pages.
